1. What are developmental domains?

Definition

A developmental domain is a natural or common group of behaviours that as humans, we display as we develop. These groups of behaviours occur as our bodies and minds development.

In education, four domains or 'categories' of development are said to exist:

1. Physical Domain

2. Social and Emotional Domain

3. Cognitive Domain

4. Language Domain

Each domain attempts to provide an overview of sequence of growth (i.e. development) that can be expected of people from birth to adulthood.

In some works, more than four developmental domains are listed, but these are generally sub-groups of the four domains listed above.

To be successful as an education support worker it is imperative that you have some knowledge of the developmental domain expectations for the learners you are going to work with.
